Student All-Stars: Tangent Elementary School

Posted on: May 9, 2018

At the first annual GAPS Student All-Stars Celebration, the School Board honored outstanding students from each school. Students were nominated by school staff and introduced by the school principal.

Tangent Elementary School All-Stars are:

Waylon Summit

Waylon is in fifth grade and is also on the leadership team. He is always the first one to ask if he can help. He helps the younger kids get to their bus at the end of the day. He is usually the first one to volunteer to go in front of the school and lead the pledge of allegiance. He volunteers in the library to help Mrs. Herrera shelve books. He is an amazing citizen around our school.

Keely Baker (not present)

Keely is a fifth grader. She helps the younger students at the end of the day get to their bus. She also takes notes at the end of the day to every classroom. She is currently on the leadership team, and does a great job at coming up with new ideas. At any time of the day, no matter what, I can ask her for help delivering something or help passing something out and she always is down to help. She volunteers to help Mrs. Herrera shelve books in the library. She is an outstanding citizen around our school.

School Board honors Student All-Stars at special meeting

Posted on: May 7, 2018

Tonight, the School Board recognized students from each school in the district for their citizenship and outstanding school and community service. The event was the first annual Recognition of Student All-Stars awards ceremony, held at South Albany High School.

In a move away from student all-star recognition at School Board meetings, the special ceremony was a festive opportunity to praise students for their efforts and character that doesn’t compete with School Board business each month and ensures that families can better celebrate their kids’ achievements.

Students were nominated by school staff. Principals from each school presented the certificates to students, who shook hands with all School Board members and posed for a school photos. In all, 44 students were recognized.

Principal comments and school photos will be posted for each school this week.

Bell schedules will change for 2018-19

Posted on: April 24, 2018

This week, the School Board heard a report from Assistant Superintendent Tonja Everest about bell schedule changes for next school year. After a one-year pilot to adjust school start times based on research about adolescent sleep needs, the schedules will revert back. The changes will make the schedules similar to bell schedules for the 2016-17 school year.

The details for the schedules at each school are not available yet. They will be presented at an upcoming School Board meeting. Busing schedule needs will influence any final adjustments.

One of the goals of the pilot bell schedule change was to ensure that all students had the same instructional time. Proposed changes will help ensure that all students have the same amount of learning time.

“One of the things we gained from this pilot is standardization of school times among elementary schools,” said Everest. “There used to be a 30-minute variance among some schools.”

The School Board is expected to vote on the proposed schedule for 2018-19 at its May meeting.
